- In 1859 James Darragh and Henry Smail, familiar with the woven products of jute in Bengal, arrived in Alappuzha with two Bengali technicians to explore prospects of the Coir yarn.
- They set up Darragh Smail & Co to produce the innovative products out of coir.
- Their success brought many other Europeans into Alappuzha.
- Followed by that so many coir companies were established by the natives of Kerala.
